Padmasri S.R. Rao,

Suryadevara Ramachandra Rao, an IAS officer of 1978 batch, who is best known as the man who transformed Surat from a dirty city into one of the cleanest cities in the country, has been appointed as the Union commerce secretary.

SR Rao is presently posted as special secretary in department of telecommunications, ministry of communications & IT. He replaces Rahul Khullar, who retired as commerce secretary recently, and joined as chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai)

Rao’s appointment was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Monday.

In a career spanning over 33 years, Rao has served in several departments such as rural development, urban development, ports, health, nuclear energy, among others
Rao has been on Central deputation since November 2008, when he was appointed additional secretary in department of information & technology, ministry of communications & IT. He was elevated as special secretary in department of telecommunications in April 2012. A Padma Shri awardee, Rao is best known for Surat’s transformation after the plague in 1994.

A host of measures were initiated when he was the Surat municipal commissioner to change the face of the Diamond City, and make it one of the cleanest cities in the country. With the country’s economy facing uncertainty on account of global woes, Rao as the commerce secretary, has the difficult job of steering the country through some tough times over the coming months.

Suryadevara Ramachandra Rao is an Indian civil servant and the former Municipal Commissioner of the Surat, a large metropolitan city in the Indian state of Gujarat. He is best known for his developmental efforts during the 1994 epidemic of plague and for transforming it from a dirty city into one of the cleanest in India, with the city being rated as the second cleanest in India, after Chandigarh, in a survey conducted by the Indian National Trust for Arts and Culture. Later he became the chairman of the Visakhapatnam Port Trust and during his tenure there, the port is reported to have become a major port in India. He also served as the Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. He was awarded the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri by the Government of India, in 1998, making him one of the few civil servants to be awarded Padma honours while in service. He is also a recipient of the Tirupathi Raju Memorial Award.

India’s transition from colonial rule to independence could not have been smooth, but for the dedication and commitment of India’s administrative service personnel.  The Indian Administrative service has contributed in no small manner in providing stability to the world’s largest democracy as also in imparting depth and direction to the nation’s progress.  Their sensitivity and adaptation to the changed context of the liberalized trade regime is indeed praiseworthy. The civil servants have stood through tough tides and defying moments- showing their permanence, ubiquity and resilience- upholding the high ideals of anonymity, simplicity and discipline and have performed varied duties under difficult circumstances in the service of the nation. To such class of civil servants belongs Shri V.P. Rama Rao.

Shri V.P. Rama Rao has an excellent track record as an administrator as well as an academic.  He served the Government of India as Director-General, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) under the Ministry of Commerce, which is a premier National Research and Training Institute in the field of foreign trade. It is during his tenure that the sprawling well-planned beautiful campus of the Institute came into existence. Under his able stewardship the Institute has successfully trained many executives in the field of foreign trade.  As Director General of IIFT he has instrumental in setting up of the Visakhapatnam Export Processing Zone. The VEPZ is doing well in augmenting exports from Andhra Pradesh and has also generated a lot of employment opportunities. The people of Visakhapatnam frankly owe it to him.  The IIFT undertook several research projects on behalf of a number of international organizations during this period. Shri Rama Rao toured several world trade research organizations in different parts of the world including JETRO in Tokyo. During his tenure as Director-General, he was also an Executive Committee Member of the International Association of Export Trade Organisation with its headquarters in London.

Joining the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1955, Shri Vartakavi Pattabhi Rama Rao has the rare distinction of being in the first batch of officers of the Indian Administrative Service selected by the British Council for specialized training in the United Kingdom. Prior to his joining the service he had a distinguished academic record at the Andhra University, Waltair and subsequently at the Delhi University. During his University days he was an inter-university debater and has won several shields for his university. Shri Rama Rao spent a year at the Manchester University obtaining a Post-Graduate Diploma inIndustrial Administration standing first in that batch, which is one of the many first he has to his credit.

As a member of the Indian Administrative Service, Shri Rama Rao has held a number of important assignments. Early in his service career within less than four years he was appointed as the District Collector and Magistrate, Srikakulam. He was General Manager A.P. State Road Transport Corporation at a time when a massive scheme of nationalization of road transport was launched. It was he who introduced many innovative schemes like operation of long distance night express services which proved to be extremely successful. He had also taken up the Administrative Reorganisation of the R.T.C. giving autonomy of operation to the Depots, which has enabled the organization to grow very rapidly. The recruitment policy followed during this period attracted many bright, young and talented officers to join this organization and those recruits have done remarkably well in later years to build up this organization to its present size.

After his long spell in the R.T.C. he spent over a decade in the field of industrial development working in all the Industrial Development Organisations of the State as the Managing Director. He also worked as the Secretary, Industries Department to the Government of Andhra Pradesh. He was the first Managing Director of the Industrial Infrastructure Corporation and it was during his tenure that several new industrial areas like Jeedimetla, Kushaiguda, Patancheru, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam were developed. These industrial areas are now flourishing with a variety of industries. The Industrial Infrastructure Corporation was built on such sound financial lines that it did not have to depend on Government’s assistance for its growth.

Several public sector industries like Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Bharat Heavy Electricals (R & D Division) were drawn to the State during his tenure. Bhadrachalam Paper Boards, Bhadrachalam, Ambuja Petro Chemicals, Patancheru, and Nagarjuna Fertilizers at Kakinada all took shape under his stewardship. The industrial climate in the State was made so good and attractive that many entrepreneurs from all over the country stormed into the State.

He also served as Special Commissioner to the Government of Andhra Pradesh at Delhi, Principal Secretary, Education Department, Andhra Pradesh, Principal Secretary, Energy, Forests, Environment, Science and Technology. He was responsible for negotiating massive financial assistance from Japan for the Srisailam Hydel Power Station. As Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh he could obtain the first massive aid for development from the World Bank.

Shri V.P. Rama Rao toured many countries extensively both to study the development of industries in those areas and also to promote trade and commerce with those countries. He was a Member of the delegation of the U.N.D.P., which visited North America, South America and several European countries. He brought out special research papers on incentives in public sector undertakings and also on participation in Government purchases abroad.

Above all, what made Shri V.P. Rama Rao, stand out, are his enduring human qualities. A fine gentleman committed to exemplary values, amiable, courteous and always pleasant, he served with utter dedication and espoused the cause of development of India in general and Andhra Pradesh in particular. By accepting the Fellowship of GIFT at its Second Convocation today, he has honoured the field of higher education in general, the people of Visakhapatnam and the Institute in particular.

A brilliant Economist by training a humanist by conviction and a development administrator par excellence Dr.P.L.Sanjeev Reddy began his career as a teacher in Andhra University. After joining the coveted Indian Administrative Service, Dr.Reddy played a key role in unshackling the Indian economy and enterprises in pivotal roles in the post-reform era as Secretary, Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission, Director General of Foreign Trade and Secretary, Department of Company Affairs. He has put his varied and rich experience in Ministries as wide ranging as Rural Development, Commerce, Law, Justice and Company Affairs and Steel to good use as also in giving direction and leadership for the education and training of present and prospective managers of international business at Indian Institute of Foreign Trade as its Director General. Given his rare academic and administrative skills, commitment and zeal, Dr.Sanjeev Reddy was urged to take over as Director of Indian Institute of Public Administration at a crucial time when governance and management of the affairs of the nation have occupied center stage.

Dr. P.L. Sanjeev Reddy has a proven track record of administrative excellence especially in the fields of international trade and social development. During the past 35 years as a distinguished member of Indian Administrative Service, Dr. Reddy held several responsible, challenging and top level assignments.

Some of these include: Secretary to Government of India, Department of Company Affairs, Ministry of Law, Justice and Company Affairs. Director General, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade; Director General of Foreign Trade, ex-Officio Additional Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India; Secretary to Government of India, Department of Rural Employment and Poverty Alleviation, Ministry of Rural Areas and Employment; Principal Adviser, Planning Commission, Government of India; Secretary, MRTP Commission; Principal  Secretary to the Chief Miniser of Andhra Pradesh and Special Assistant to the President of India. He is presently Director, Indian Institute of Public Administration.

Dr.P.L.Sanjeev Reddy has a Doctorate in Industrial Management. He also has a Post Graduate Diploma in Development Studies from the University of Cambridge (UK). He joined the Indian Administrative Service  (IAS) in 1964.

Starting  his IAS career as an Assistant Collector and Executive Magistrate, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, Dr. P.L. Sanjeev Reddy served as  Sub-Collector and Joint Magistrate, Madanapalle, Andhra Pradesh, Under Secretary, Ministry of Steel and Heavy Engineering, Government of India; Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Steel and Mines, Government of India, District Collector and District Magistrate, Cuddapah, Director of Sugar and Cane , Commissioner and Additional Registrar of Cooperative Societies. As Managing Director of A.P. Industrial Development Corporation, he was unanimously elected as the Chairman of the Council of State Industrial and Investment Corporation of India. In recognition of his commitment and rich contribution,  Dr. P.L. Sanjeev Reddy won several  laurels which include  national awards for managerial excellence, productivity enhancement, trade promotion and  outstanding contribution towards investment and industrial promotion, technology transfer, sustainable development, social development and for all round achievement and outstanding services and excellence in the fields of public administration, industrial management and strategic policy formulation and implementation. He restructured national anti poverty programmes to achieve greater cohesion and convergence. He had pioneered Company Law settlement scheme, fast track exit scheme for corporates and facilitated better corporate governance through innovative amendments to the Companies Act, formulation of Competition Law, creation of Investor Protection and Education fund and computerization of the offices of Company Law Administration. All his initiatives generated great comfort, handsome revenues, customer focus and enhanced credibility to the company law administration. 

Above all, what makes Dr. P.L. Sanjeev Reddy an outstanding personality is the initiatives he has taken in trade promotion, social development and corporate governance. He is the principal architect of liberalized EXIM Policy, netting an increase of over Rs.36,000/- crores of foreign exchange during his eventful tenure as Director General of Foreign Trade. As Director General, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade he developed and widened its activities and made it into a center of excellence. He facilitated Electronic Commerce, Indian Ocean RIM initiative and Competition Law. As Secretary Rural Development, he infused new orientation and thrust to anti-poverty programmes streamlined all the Rural Development Schemes to become pro-poor, pro-women and pro-employment. As Secretary, Company Affairs, he scripted Company Law, fast track scheme, which yielded and enhanced revenues of Rs.30,000/- crores apart from giving relief and comfort to the Corporates. As Director of SEBI, he contributed greatly to the operation and orientation of the principles and practices of better Corporate Governance. In every capacity he walked his talk and brought in innovation, dynamism and result orientedness. He was compassionate in his approach and passionate in all his academic and administrative pursuits towards perfection.   He left an enduring stamp of efficiency, effectiveness, and innovation on whatever assignment he held and did the service proud. Apart from outstanding ability, integrity and leadership, he excelled in academic, research and consultancy reorienting the policy mix, systems and practices to make administration citizen centric. He was the proud recipient of the highly coveted “Golden Peacock Award” for his lifetime achievement and excellence in public service instituted by the Institute of Directors, London from the arms of Dr.P.C.Alexander, Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra in the year 2002. Several such awards sit lightly on his strong shoulders who with his disarming modesty and sincerity and integrity continues his efforts towards professional perfection. Through thought, word and deed Dr.Reddy emerged as a role model for the administrators as an outstanding blend of academic brilliance, administrative excellence and transformational leadership.

Dr. N.K. Sen Gupta,

A renowned management thinker, a successful bureaucrat, an accomplished historian, and a pro-reform politician, Dr Nitish K Sengupta has distinguished himself through his contributions in diverse fields. With an ideal blend of  scientific temper and aesthetic sense, Dr Sengupta is perhaps among the few whose left side of the brain is as sharp as the right. A versatile persona Dr. Nitish K Sengupta has eclectic interests and competencies, of which is music: HMV released his cassette on Rabindra Sangeet.

Educated at Presidency College, Kolkata and the University of Delhi, Dr Sengupta consistently maintained a first-class academic record and won a gold medal in MA (History). He joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1957 and held various positions in ministries both in West Bengal and at the Centre with distinction for 35 years. In between he got a Ph.D. in management from Delhi University.

Dr Sengupta’s recent publications include The History of the Bengali Speaking People and the Biography of Dr B. C. Roy. He has written his autobiography, Inside the Steel Frame, which has gone into several reprints. He has been one of the most popular columnists for both national and regional dailies and weeklies. Dr Sengupta co-authored a popular textbook, Government and Business, with the doyen of management education in India, Dr A. Dasgputa. A significant contribution to management students and experts in India, it is a prescribed text in many universities and institutions and has gone into several reprints. Unshackling of Indian Industry and Changing Pattern of Corporate Management are among his other well-received works.

Dr Sengupta’s research monographs have provided new insights into exports and foreign direct investment. His most recent work, Strategic Management: Vision for the Future, reflects the contributions a historian can make towards visualizing the future. As the saying goes, ‘The deeper you dig the farther you look ahead.’ He is the editor of Cybernetics and a member of the editorial board of the Global Business Review.

The Director General of the International Management Institute at New Delhi, Dr Sengupta has played a major role in the setting up a number of management institutions in the country. He has also taught at the Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi for many years as visiting faculty and has lectured at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and Manchester Business School.

Dr Sengupta has been on the Boards of the Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata, Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad, Management Development Institute, Gurgaon. In addition, he has also served on the boards of numerous educational institutions like TAPMI and ICFAI and corporations such as the Nagarjuna Group, Andrew Yule, Leela Group of Hotels and CARE.

As Controller of Capital Issues, Dr Sengupta has played a major role in the transformation of capital markets in India. As Director-General of Tourism he gave a fresh impetus to tourism. As Revenue Secretary and subsequently as Member Secretary, Planning Commission, Dr Sengupta drafted the Eighth Five Year Plan which ushered in new thinking as a prelude to economic liberalization. In the pre- and post-liberalization era, Dr Sengupta headed many committees constituted by the Government of India. He was Chairman of the High-Powered Committee on Financial Sector Restructuring in 1983-84. He drafted the Prasar Bharati Bill and headed the committee set up to restructure stand-alone refineries in the country. He headed the Amarnath Yatri Tragedy Enquiry Committee in 1996 and the Steel Export Strategy Committee in 1996-98. He was also a member of the expert committee instituted to select the best steel plant for the Prime Minister’s Trophy.

A gifted speaker, Dr Sengupta has been guest faculty in several UN-sponsored courses in Asia and Europe. Indefatigable, he is now busy establishing a new management school – which blends the best of Eastern and Western thought on management – under the auspices of the Vivekananda Ramakrishna Mission, Kolkata. 

Dr Sengupta has also been a member of the 13th Lok Sabha since 1999.

Venkat Jasti is a name synonymous with achievement and excellence in the field of Pharmaceuticals. Shri Jasti is one of the very few people who have worked hard to bring the pride of the Indian Pharmaceutical Industry to new heights.

After receiving his Masters degree in Pharmacy from the Andhra University in 1972, Shri Jasti went abroad to pursue higher education. He did his MS in Industrial Pharmacy at St. John’s University, New York, USA.

Born in 1949 into a farmer’s family in a village of Andhra Pradesh, Shri Jasti started his career as a Production Officer in Warner Hindustan Limited in India and migrated to USA in 1974. He joined the league of registered   Pharmacists in the state of New Jersey, USA in 1976 and became the first non American basic degree holder to join the league. He also joined the league of registered Pharmacists in the state of New York.

The visionary in him made him launch and operate a chain of  community pharmacies in the United States.  His entrepreneurial drive made him acquire a community pharmacy in the year 1977 and later another five community pharmacies in New York and New Jersey areas by 1980 and successfully operated them till 1988. Shri Jasti, then chose to bring Home his success story.

As a Member of the American Pharmaceutical Society,  president elect of the Essex County Pharmaceutical Society 1986-87( the first Indian ever to achieve this honour), Member,  New Jersey Senate Mediacid Committee on drugs, Member, Monmouth County, New Jersey, Member, Monmouth County (NJ), Local Board of Education, Shri Jasti’s contribution to the World  Pharmaceutical Industry has been extensive.

A patriot in the true sense of the term, Shri Jasti,  with rich experience, returned to India in 1989 to establish Suven Pharmaceuticals Limited as its Founder  Managing Director, a company which specializes in ‘Contract Research and Manufacturing Services (C-R-A-M-S), now re-christened as Suven Life Sciences Limited.

Recognizing his dynamism and unique contributions in the field of Pharmaceutical research, manufacturing services, and pharma exports, Shri Jasti has been chosen to lead many bodies in India. He served as the  Past President of Indian Pharmaceutical Association, Andhra Pradesh State Branch (2000-2002), Chairman of Local Organizing Committee for The Millennium 52nd Indian Pharmaceutical Congress held at Hyderabad (2000);  President of Bulk Drug Manufacturers Association, India (BDMA) 2001-2004. President, Indian Pharmaceutical Association,  A.P. (IPA) (2000–2002); and Vice President, Governing Body, Jubilee Hills Educational Society, Hyderabad.

Shri Jasti, showed the way for alumni contributions, he was instrumental in starting Andhra University Pharmacy Alumni Charitable Trust in 1997.

Shri Jasti was  also  instrumental for the establishment of   Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council (PHARMEXCIL), the first ever such export promotion council headquartered in Andhra Pradesh at Hyderabad and served as  Vice-Chairman. He is the Chief Architect and Co-ordinator of the Pharmacity which is coming up in Visakhapatnam to set up Centres of excellence in Pharmaceutical manufacturing, Research &Development  and clinical trials.

A pioneer in his chosen field, Shri Jasti is also the Chief Architect in the formation of AP Chief Minister’s Task Force for Pharma, set up for the promotion of Pharmaceutical Industry, in the State of Andhra Pradesh in the year 2000.

Shri Jasti is unequivocally an extraordinary achiever and leader in pharmaceutical manufacturing, Research & Development and export promotion; and a thought leader in establishing Indian Institute of Life Sciences at Hyderabad.

A multitask master, Shri Jasti is an educationist, a philanthropist and a visionary with incredible erudition. In recognition of Shri Jasti’s tremendous professional leadership and prodigious contribution to the development of the pharmaceutical industry the Institute confers on him Fellow of the GIFT.

Sri Ramakrishna Karuturi, is a visionary and a doyen of Indian Floriculture Industry. Sri Ramakrishna Karuturi is one of the few and rare agri - entrepreneurs successful in the field of floriculture exports from India.

Born to Sri Karuturi Surya Rao and Yashodha, on 23rd August 1965 at Tanuku, West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, Sri Ramakrishna Karuturi  forsake the family business and wealth to create a vibrant, sustainable  world class business in the cut flower realm providing employment to rural poor.

As the President of the Floriculture Exporters Association, for 4 years, Sri Ramakrishna Karuturi conceptualized a unique agri produce marketing system for India by setting up an auction on the Dutch model in Bangalore way back in 1997. He has been instrumental in developing the domestic market beyond the metros into the hinterlands.

His academic record is an equal match to his entrepreneurial excellence. A topper in School, he also emerged 2nd in Mechanical Engineering from Bangalore University and completed his MBA on the Dean’s Honors’ List from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OHIO, USA.

Always setting higher targets with an achievement orientation, Sri Ramakrishna Karuturi  now embarks on a new voyage of discovery. He is setting up a joint venture with Ernst & Young in Africa. It will be the second largest cut flower production facility in the world. Sri Ramakrishna Karuturi already has a toehold-in Columbia and Vietnam, apart from existing marketing offices in the UK, Australia and Germany. He has also recently pioneered the export of rose bushes to Europe for the hobby gardening segment, a great achievement, considering all plants were imported from Europe until 1995.

The unique technology, Sri Ramakrishna Karuturi built and operates through www.rosebazaar.com, went into developing an online real time response auction and has found many takers. In the process of evolving this technology an acute shortage of bandwidth, led him to set up India’s first private gateway in 2000. He also runs an exclusive ISP service catering to top notch clientele.  His company is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and has a market cap of Rs.60 crores.

Coming from a family of industrialists and great philanthropists, Sri Ramakrishna Karuturi understands his social obligation. He contributes regularly to the advancement of education by generous donations to his Alma Mater and other organizations. Being inventive and devotional, he has evolved a unique seva in Tirumala Tirupati that won the acclaim – “Vykunt on Bhoolok”.

Sri Ramakrishna Karuturi has been featured in Time magazine for his effort in bringing a turnaround to the floriculture industry in India in 2000. Several other magazines carry features on Sri Ramakrishna Karuturi’s success as an agri-entrepreneur. Today his contribution to perishable agri marketing is being evaluated as an alternative to the APMC system by the Ministry of Agriculture. He has been the inspiration behind NDDB’s pioneering foray into fruit, vegetable and flower auction at Bangalore. He is advising the UP government’s UP Mandhi Parishad Board on the upcoming auction in Noida and is involved in helping APEDA and Maharashtra State Agricultural Board to  (MSAB) to setup auction facilities in Mumbai.

Today the name of Sri Ramakrishna Karuturi is synonymous with successful floriculture and Auction systems for agri marketing. Sri Ramakrishna Karuturi draws inspiration from his father’s principles and work ethic that lead him to success in all his endeavors.

In recognition of Sri Ramakrishna Karuturi’s contribution to perishable agri-marketing, education and technology-driven growth of rural India and philanthropic activities, the institute confers on him Fellow of the GIFT.

Sridhar Nadupalli is an international entrepreneur in the field of information technology. He dares to dream and with the zeal of a visionary strived to realize his dream.

Born to Smt. Parvatavardhani and Sri Ramakrishna Rao in 1963, Seidhar Nadupalli is the second son, and hails from humble moorings of Hyderabad. Sridhar Nadupalli always aimed high. He excelled all through his academic pursuits and won several distinctions.

Even before completing formal education, Post Graduation in Computer Science, he began to dream of being a successful entrepreneur. He started his entrepreneurial efforts by conducting a detailed study of how the banking system can help ease payment of wages for the labourers working in the Telugu Ganga Project. Impressed by his efforts, State Bank of India offered to support his entrepreneurship and thus began the journey of Sankhya. Today Sankhya Infotech Ltd., is recognized for its innovative contributions to aviation industry.

Sridhar Nadupalli is the Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of this internationally reputed Defense and Aerospace Software company, Sankhya Infotech Limited.  Sridhar is a researcher and has to his credit papers published in several international and national journal. A patent registered in his name for specialized bar coding technology, speaks of his intellectual prowess. Sridhar has extensively studies operations research, linear programming & dynamic data modelling which have great relevance in the fields of Defence and Aerospace Industries.

His leadership of Sankhya Infotech has also been marked by several accomplishments. The world’s first ever simulation training over the web in the first year of incorporation in 1997 by Sankhya has been appreciated as the pioneering research done in the field of aviation safety by the Federal Aviation Administration, USA. He is a member of several international organizations such as IEEE, Global Offsets & Counter Trade Association (GOCA) and AICC.

Chandrasekhar Movva or Sekhar Movva as he is commonly referred, is a first generation global entrepreneur with exemplary courage and indomitable spirit. Building –“SYNERGIES” – a world-class wheel manufacturing company in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, Shekhar Movva is a pioneer of the Indian outsourcing Industry.

Born on January 12th, 1965, the fourth child and only son of Sri Ramachandra Rao, and Smt. Kusuma Kumari, Shekhar brought immense pride not only to his parents but to the city of Visakhapatnam.

In 1985 he graduated with distinction from Andhra University and was awarded the Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering. Shortly after joining IIM, Calcutta, Shekhar left for US to pursue his post graduate studies as the proud recipient of the prestigious Rochester General Motors Fellow. At the age of 22, he graduated with honors and a Masters degree from Michigan State University with a remarkable GPA of 3.93/4.00. During his term, he was invited to join the American Mechanical Engineering Honor Society called PI Tau SIGMA, and he also qualified to join MENSA, the high IQ society.

In 1992, Shekhar was one of the few to be admitted with a grant, into the Masters in Management programme of the Kellogg School of Management, the then number of business school in the US. He graduated with Honors (GPA 3.83/4.00) in the year 1994.

His passion for cars and automobiles led him to join EMRC, a boutique engineering company in the US, and was associated with pioneering design and engineering work for General Motors, Ford, Chrysler and many other Japanese automotive transplants. After spending four years in Detroit he was deputed to the Company’s Japanese partner ZEXEL CORPORATION, a $1.6 billion dollar fuel injection manufacturer which is a part of the Toyota keiretsu. During his successful 2 year stint in a very complicated Japanese market, Shekhar started his group from scratch, training and developing 12 Japanese engineers in software sales and services.

After working in California for sometime, this prodigal son of the soil returned to India to fulfill his and his father’s dream of setting up a world-class facility in India, for servicing the globe. Shri Shekhar started ‘SYNERGIES’, now “SYNERGIES Castings Ltd.,” – as an Indo-Korean joint venture with a technology collaboration and buy back arrangement to produce aluminum alloy wheels in India. Contrary to conventional wisdom, he aimed straight away to serve the tough international markets by setting up a Rs.106 crores world-class facility. Thus began the ‘flobal entrepreneurial’ career of Shekhar.

Shekhar’s resolve and resilience were put to the acid test as the venture met with more than its share of setbacks. In the wake of the South East Asian crisis, the partnership has fallen through leaving Synergies stranded with unfamiliar technology, unknown production processes and untried markets. With courage and dedication, Shekhar built the company into a reputed manufacturer of premium wheels.

Within two years, SYNERGIES became a major distributor of alloy wheels in the US spares market and developed a strong North American footprint. Shekhar skillfully leveraged this experience to build the required credentials to supply to other car manufacturers such as GM, Ford, DCX, Land Rover, Jaguar, Volvo, and so on.

Under his inspiring leadership, Synergies earned a number of ‘firsts’ to its credit and set several industry bench marks – the first Indian Tier I component supplier to Ford in Europe; the first supplier from India to be qualified as Ford’s ‘Full Service Supplier’ – from concept development to just-in-time delivery and not just making to order; the largest order-taker in the Indian auto component industry, in excess of $180 million dollars from General Motors USA for their most prestigious vehicles –Hummer H2, Hummer H3 and Cadillac Escalade.

Leveraging its international experience, synergies ‘created’ this product segment in India. Today, the alloy wheels for 7 out of 10 cars are from Synergies and their customer list reads like a who’s who – GM, Ford, Toyota, TATA Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and so on. Synergies not only revolutionized the wheel industry in India, but was also instrumental in transforming a small hamlet called ‘Duvvada’ into a busy, bustling area providing employment to more than 6000 families. Synergies was also the first major manufacturing unit of the VSEZ, which was showcased a s model venture for potential investor.

Shekhar is a true visionary who blazed the path of the auto component sector and who opened doors to the global markets for the other Indian industries.

Shri Sridhar Panuganti, is Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Xinthe Technologies (P) Ltd., Visakhapatnam.

Born to

Shri Sridhar has over 20 years of experience in the IT Industry, all of which has come from working in the US. He started his professional career with Infosys Technologies, KSA and Reebok International Limited.

He was instrumental in overseeing and managing highly complex projects for clients and employers using variety of ERP packages and database technologies, He holds a B. Tech degree in Electronics and communications from IIT, Madras, India.

Shri Sridhar returned to India in 2001 with a dream to become world recognized IT solutions provider which was cherished and pursued during his 15-year stint in USA and this has come true with Xinthe as an entrepreneur and started Xinthe Technologies (P) Ltd., which is today recognized as the leader in the IT Industry in Vizag. Sita Ratnam and Shri OSR Murthy on 3rd September, 1968, Naresh Kumar is an Engineering graduate from the Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management(GITAM), now a constituent of the GITAM University.
